Through high-quality, culturally-responsive programming, PACE’s Case Management supports youth in the development of academic and social-emotional skills essential to success in their secondary and postsecondary careers. In order the combat the systemic oppression that students and their communities face, the department’s ultimate goal is to alter the trajectory of underperforming students to empower them to graduate from high school with a diploma.
PACE’s Case Management serves as the primary social-emotional support program at Burton High School. Students enrolled in the program receive wrap around services through Burton and the Bayview Hunters Point YMCA. Through one-on-one sessions with a Student Success Advocate, students will develop social-emotional skills necessary to be conscientious and productive members of the Burton High School community.
PROGRAMMING SCHEDULE
Student Success Advocates work closely with students, their teachers, and families to develop a regular meeting schedule. Scheduled meetings will support students in developing their time management and organizational skills, as well as helping them learn healthy boundaries with adult partners. Student Success Advocates also meet regularly with teachers of enrolled students to outline expectations and support plans to bolster student outcomes. Programming is also extended to the parents and families of enrolled students.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Student Success Advocates hold quarterly academic review meetings with partner programs that meet with Burton students on an individual or small group basis. These meetings are used to pool resources and develop strategic action plans to support students in becoming academically successful. Students enrolled in Case Management also receive in-class support from their respective Student Success Advocates, who help develop their individual academic and social skills as active participants in the classroom.
All students enrolled in Case Management are required to participate in Puma Academy, a credited after school academic support program. Through Puma Academy, participants receive individualized and small-group academic support from teachers and tutors, develop life skills through regular workshops, and participate in community service activities. Student Success Advocates support students in meeting their Puma Academy expectations by creating space for discussion in sessions and providing direct support during their time in Puma Academy.

“IT TAKES A VILLAGE”
Student Success Advocates establish contact with the parent/guardian of the student prior to official enrollment into the program. A student and parent contract is to be signed before services can be received. Student Success Advocates contact guardians of enrolled students each grading period to provide updates on student progress. Once students are officially enrolled in Case Management, their teachers will be informed. Student Success Advocates rely heavily on counselors and teachers to co-create success and support plans for our students.
